Our products offer a relaxing, safe and supportive environment for all of the users to sit, rest and sleep in and the ease at which they can be operated means they are one of the most popular products on the market.
What are spinal disorders?
There are a large number of problems which can affect the back and spine, these could be infections or tumours, down to personal injury or even through the bone changes that come with age such as slipped or herniated discs or spinal stenosis.
Spinal infection – Infections in and around the spine can occur for a number of reasons and can affect all areas of the spine, from the vertebral column (bones), the intervertebral discs to the Dural sac (the covering around the spinal cord).
Infections could be fungal or caused by bacteria and usually occur following surgery or because of associated risk factors such as:
- Poor Nutrition
- Immune suppression
- HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
Tumours – When you hear the term tumour you could be forgiven for thinking of malignant cancerous growths but in truth it is possible to also have benign growths within the spinal area, the problem with the back is that these tumours could lead to a whole host of problems even if they don’t grow or spread.
If a tumour were to press on the spinal cord or to form in the space between the vertebrae this could cause a loss of feeling, weakness, sciatica, and change in bowel and bladder habits or severe pain. Any of the following symptoms should be checked at the earliest possible opportunity by your GP.
Herniated discs – Herniated or slipped discs is a term used when the gel like fluid contained within the cushioned discs that separate the vertebrae, leaks and protrudes from the fibrous shell of the disc. When a bulge forms it can make both sitting and sleeping difficult and uncomfortable for the patient and can also lead to nerve compression and problems such as sciatica.
Spinal stenosis – This is a condition where the narrowing of the spinal canal can put pressure on both nerves and the spinal cord and mainly occurs in those over the age of 50.
It is worth noting that spinal stenosis can also affect younger people with a spinal injury or an already narrow spinal canal.
Aside from these conditions there are also some rare and genetic spinal disorders to look out for, these could be conditions such as Ankylosing or Rheumatoid Spondylitis which are a form of spinal arthritis, it is a deeply painful condition where swelling between the vertebrae or between the spine and pelvis can cause stiffness and discomfort. At present there is no cure for this condition and over a long period of time the vertebrae may even fuse together.
When to see a doctor
If you feel like you have any of the above conditions, or are suffering from shooting pain, pressure around your hips and pelvis, aches, twists or stiffness then it is always advised that you contact your GP.
Following a consultation with a medical professional it may be that you are diagnosed with one of the pre-mentioned conditions and that you require treatment, or a method of delaying any further deterioration.
Here at Adjustamatic we can offer a wide range of services, beds and chairs to help you manage your condition.
Maybe our services could be better matched with a relative of yours, in any case our dedicated team would love to hear from you.
