:

For those who suffer from Sciatica, no matter how frequently, discomfort caused is always the same, what’s more anybody at any age can suffer from the condition. As the longest nerve in the human body, the sciatic nerve runs from the feet, all the way up both legs, through the buttocks and into the back of the pelvis, the pain comes when the nerve becomes trapped or compressed and can be measured in varying degrees of severity from mild to very acute pain.

Causes of sciatica

The most common cause of sciatica is in the form of a slipped or herniated disc. The discs act as a cushion to the vertebrae of the spine and are made up of a fibrous outer shell filled with a gel like substance, if the outer layer of one of these discs were to rupture or tear then the inner contents can protrude, causing an irregularity in shape.  This bulge would then press on the sciatic nerve and cause pain and discomfort. The aging population are more at risk of this type of injury as the discs become more brittle as they grow older, meaning any unexpected strain can cause damage.

Other causes of sciatica can be things such as the narrowing of nerve passages in the spine, a condition known as spinal stenosis, this narrowing can be as a direct result of changes in the ligaments of the spine, as part of the aging process or in rare cases from a bone disease such as osteoporosis or Paget’s disease .  If any of these conditions form the basis of your sciatica then it is possible that lumbar decompressive surgery may help.

The  human body may also let you know of another problem and sciatica can be a symptom of infection, injury or in the event of a growth within the spine such as a tumour.

Preventing sciatica

Although it is not always possible to prevent sciatica, there are several ways that you can reduce your chances of suffering from the condition, the three main areas to concentrate on in terms of the prevention of sciatica are lifting and handling, exercise and posture.

Lifting and handling – In terms of this area of prevention there are a set of very important questions that you must ask yourself:

Can you manage the lift and are there any lifting aids available? – You should always assess  the load that you are about to lift and evaluate whether or not you can first carry the weight and secondly if there is an easier option available.

Are you in a good position? – Look at whether you are in a stable, well balanced stance and that there are no dangers such as slip, trip or fall hazards in your way.

Is the load even? – It is always best to keep the load evenly distributed  in terms of weight and to carry it as close to your waist as possible, with the heaviest end nearest to you, this prevents you from becoming off balance.

Do you know your limits? – Always make sure that you know how much you can carry, make sure your path is clear and  that you can keep your head up when carrying, feeling unsure and looking down at the box could lead to an accident, it is also important not to over-carry as twisting your back or leaning sideways could lead to sciatica attacks.

Exercise – Exercise is an excellent way to strengthen the back and spine and can be preventative in the causes of sciatica, it is however worth noting that if you have suffered from back pain for long periods of time you should consult your GP before taking part in vigorous exercise.

Traditionally people have used swimming and walking as good forms of exercise as they are very low impact but they strengthen the muscles in the upper legs and lower back. Recently however there has been a trend to partake in yoga or pilates, both of these exercises will improve flexibility and strengthen the core but be advised, it is crucial that you use an experienced and qualified instructor.

Posture – Posture is the single most important factor when it comes to  the prevention of sciatica, and indeed is one of the main areas of our focus at AdjustableBeds.co.uk.

Whether you are standing, sitting, driving or sleeping it is recommended  that you remain well supported and in the right areas, our range of beds and chairs can offer this support and here’s how.
