A report commissioned by the BBC issued yesterday (28th January 2015) indicated that spending on care for people aged 65 and over has fallen by a fifth in England over the last 10 years.
The research – based on official data – showed £1,188 was being spent in 2003-4 per person over the age of 65. By 2013-14 that had fallen to £951 – a drop of 20% – prompting experts to warn that vulnerable people were being failed.
Janet Morrison, chief executive of charity The Independent Age, said: “These new figures highlight how the most vulnerable and elderly in our society have been affected by cuts to social care.
“Older people who struggle with everyday tasks such as washing, dressing and cooking have been badly hit, as social care services have been withdrawn over time. The knock-on effect of this has been to see a greater demand in the NHS and in pinch points like A&E departments.”
The concept of age, or more specifically the UK’s aging population, has in recent times forced many consumers to address their own futures.
This report may indicate that due to a reduction in care funding, for many of us we can no longer rely on a move into residential care in later life.
At Adjustamatic we have seen an increase in consumers investing in products that enable them to retain their domestic independence, with more and more people taking to using furniture which actually supports their mobility.
In fact, as consumers have become more aware of the many different factors that contribute to a good night’s sleep through product research, increasing numbers are turning to specialist beds with proven health benefits.
Commenting on the research findings, Managing Director of Adjustamatic, Irving Milsom said:
“With over 8 million people in the UK aged over 65, for many, maintaining a sense of independence in their own home has become increasingly important, particularly as this report indicates; spending on care continues to fall. At Adjustamatic we have helped thousands of customers regain their mobility and ease pain symptoms through our range of products with our unique cyclo-therapy system.
“Our unique therapy system found in our beds and chairs is helping those with pain from conditions including arthritis, oedema and sciatica treat themselves in their own homes, enabling them a credible-drug free alternative for pain management. Plus by investing in a chair that helps raise you into a standing position or a bed that moulds itself precisely to fit your body, we have been helping those with mobility issues to help themselves for over 50 years.”
