While the position we snooze in may seem like a simple matter of personal preference to many of us, the results of a study conducted by Robert Phillips (the UK’s leading body language expert) revealed certain links between the way in which we sleep through the night and who we are in our waking hours.
So, what can you find out about yourself from your sleeping position? Choose your preferred position from the six popular ones below to see if your personality matches up:

People who sleep in a foetal position are typically described as being conscientious, but also over-thinkers and prone to worry. According to the study, this was the most common sleeping position with 41% of the 1,000 participants adopting it—with double the number of women over men using it.

Those who sleep on their side with both arms ahead of them are believed to be risk-takers looking for more from life—and are likely to do whatever it takes to get what they want.

This oddly-named position is applied to a person lying on their back with their arms at their sides, and was the top choice for around eight per cent of participants. Typically, the people opting for this position are stubborn, and may well be described as being inflexible to the point of bossiness.

Lying on your front with both hands up around the pillow with your head turned to one side is a favoured position for those believing they have no control over what happens in their life, and are prone to waking up with anxiety.
While Robert Phillips’ study focused on the above four, a similar study conducted by Professor Chris Idzikowski (one of the country’s top sleep experts) looked at two more positions:

Sleepers lying on their sides with their arms by their sides are generally laid-back, social types—though they may also be gullible. Also, when asked how they slept, they may respond “like a log”, unaware of the irony.

Anybody sleeping on their back with their arms up around their pillow are typically good listeners, as well as being willing to offer help when the situation calls for it. Starfish-sleepers may also be unwilling to be the centre of attention.
