Back pain is a terribly debilitating condition which can affect people of all ages. It is estimated that more than 80% of adults will suffer from some kind of back pain at some point in their lives. What’s more, back pain isn’t always the result of an injury, particularly lower back pain. Sitting, standing or lying in the wrong position can cause severe pain and discomfort and can start to have an effect on your daily life. However, changing your position can also be the key to alleviating that pain. Many people who suffer from back pain don’t realise that it could be their bed or regular chair which is causing the pain in the first place.
It is thought that adjustable beds can be effective in relieving back pain and the discomfort that it causes. Recent research by primary care physicians found that seven out of ten doctors would recommend sitting in a reclined position to help relieve back pain. When a person is reclined, their body is completely supported, which removes the strain that causes the pain. Consequently, an adjustable bed can help with other pain problems such as neck and shoulder pain, arthritis and restless leg syndrome.
As for sleeping, the more natural position for sleep is actually with the legs slightly elevated. This takes pressure off the lumbar spine and can help with lower back problems. However, there can be other benefits too. Circulation is increased because the pressure points which are caused by sleeping on a hard, flat surface are reduced. Elevating the legs also stimulates the entry of excess fluid into the circulatory system, and reduces the risk of edema (when there is abnormal fluid volume in the tissues).
An adjustable electric bed can also help with asthma and other breathing difficulties. By elevating the upper body, the pressure on the lungs is reduced. This coupled with increased circulation and reduced edema also helps to reduce any build-up of fluid on the lungs.
Stomach problems can also be aided because elevation of the head by at least six inches stops harsh stomach acids from leaking back up into the oesophagus through acid reflux. You may also notice positive results for dealing with snoring and sleep apnoea when using an adjustable bed too.
We have a range of adjustable beds available, including the Elite bed, which has a fantastic memory foam Aveon mattress and built-in Cyclo-Therapy technology, which has been found to help with insomnia and sleep apnoea. This bed is available in single, double, queen and king size versions and also has the Easy Reach system, which makes it easier for you to access your bedside table even when you are in an elevated position.
Alternatively, check out our Heritage orthopaedic bed, which is fully electric and also includes Cyclo-Therapy technology and the Easy Reach system. It has a traditional look and so will fit perfectly into most bedrooms. The memory foam mattress also helps to relieve pressure points, provide extra comfort and improve the quality of sleep.
