Could getting a new mattress improve your life?

Could getting a new mattress improve your life?

Tucked away out of sight under your duvet in your bedroom, your mattress might not be the first thing that springs (pardon the pun) to mind when you’re thinking about your quality of life. However, these seemingly simple sleeping aids can in fact have a big impact on how we feel, so it’s important that yours makes the grade. Whether your mattress has seen better days or is downright dodgy, now’s the time to make a change - and here’s why.

Keeping bad backs at bay

According to figures cited by The Sleep Council, every year more than four in ten people in the UK experience bouts of back pain. Often, it’s the lower back that’s affected, and risk factors for this discomfort include everything from your posture to the way you pick things up. Your mattress can also play a major role in making you more susceptible to backache. Ideally, the padding you sleep on should support the weight of your buttocks and shoulders while helping to keep your spine straight.

Physiotherapists recommend holding a ‘midline position’ while you sleep. This might sound like technical talk, but it just means maintaining the natural curves of your spine to help reduce the strain on your back. If your mattress is too soft, it dips in the middle or its springs dig into your back, holding the midline might be a challenge. So, to help ensure you wake up in the morning without aches and pains, a decent mattress is a must.

Helping you to nod off at night

We’d all like to be able to sink into peaceful slumber at the end of each day, but one obstacle to entering the land of nod is a poor quality mattress. Bear in mind that an uncomfy bed could do far more than give you fatigue. It may have potentially far reaching consequences for your health and wellbeing more generally. Long-term sleeplessness is associated with everything from an increased risk of depression to a drop in fertility. It can also compromise your immune system, make it harder to stay in shape and put you at an elevated risk of serious health conditions like diabetes and heart disease.

What really matters when you’re picking a mattress?

It’s one thing deciding to replace your mattress for a better model, but how exactly should you select this sleeping aid? Should you go for pocket springs, memory foam or continuous coil designs? There’s no right and wrong when it comes to purchasing these products. The important thing to remember is that the mattress you buy should suit your specific needs. Your preferred sleeping position, build and weight will all have a bearing on which design is best for you. For example, if you like to sleep on your side, you might need a softer mattress than you would if you preferred to rest on your back.

Whichever design you go for, never forget that quality counts. By choosing a premium mattress by a reputable brand, you can benefit from a better sleeping experience.
